Spangled Emperor Reef Fishing

Spangled emperor are a prized tropical reef species found across northern Australian reefs from WA through the NT and Queensland, targeted with fresh baits on paternoster rigs in 10 to 50 metres over coral and rubble substrate. They are excellent table fish and are frequently caught alongside coral trout and red emperor on shallow inshore and offshore reefs.

Fishing Tips

  1. 1

Spangled emperor are primarily a dawn and dusk feeder — plan your drift to have baits in the water as the sky turns pink and fish up until the sun gets high, then return for the evening session.

  2. 2

Use a whole fresh squid head or a small live fusiler/yellowtail as your primary bait — spangled emperor are selective and whole natural baits on a light running sinker rig outperform cut baits.

  3. 3

Work reefs in 10–40 m over coral bommies and rubble patches — spangled emperor stay close to structure during the day and move onto surrounding sand and rubble to feed at low light.

  4. 4

After catching and keeping a fish, drop it straight back — spangled emperor school and where you catch one, there will be more. Stay on a productive drift and make multiple passes over the same ground.

  5. 5

On tropical tides, focus on the last of the run-out — the concentrated current over the reef edge funnels baitfish and emperor take up feeding stations at the edges of the flow.
