How to Catch Baldchin Groper
Feed throughout all tidal phases but are most active on current flow over reef structure. Tidal movement triggers feeding in deeper fish.
Active from dawn to dusk. Will bite through the middle of the day unlike many other reef species. Best periods are dawn and the mid-morning bite.
Clear water over offshore reefs. Found at 20–60m on WA's Abrolhos Islands and Perth metro reefs. Calm conditions are needed for comfortable offshore fishing.
Reef ledges and gutters with mixed coral and rubble bottom. Baldchin groper are often found near their burrows in sponge gardens and under ledges.
Slow-pitch jigging works extremely well. Bottom bait with squid and octopus is reliable. Use lighter tackle — they're not as powerful as dhufish but fight hard.
The Abrolhos Islands (Geraldton) are the epicentre of baldchin groper fishing. The two-week window either side of Easter is traditionally the most productive period.
